provide a comprehensive listing of all the known Web Pages that relate to the practise of
Anaesthesia. The Global Textbook of Anesthesia at http://gasnet.med.yale.edu/gta/ is also a
valuable reference source.
Cardiology
Cardioguide at http://www.cardioguide.com/cardio/
is an excellent resource for cardiologists. It
acts as a jumping board to thousands of websites,
which have been classified and catalogued systematically,
so you can browse through areas of interest. It
offers links classified according to cardiology
subspecialties ranging from : Electrocardiography
to Catheterization to Nuclear Cardiology to Transplantation
; links to cardiology organisations; as well as
links to all possible cardiological disorders
from A to Z, ranging from aortic aneurysm to Wolff-Parkinson-White
Syndrome. There is also a cardiology search engine
on the site, so you can find details on the Net
with ease. A particularly nice feature is a Medline
search engine specifically designed for cardiology
and is very useful if you find that you retrieve
too many references with a regular Medline search.
This option basically limits the search to key
cardiology journals, so that you get only references
which are likely to be useful to cardiologists.
The American College of Cardiology is online
at http://www.acc.org and the American
Heart Association has a huge website packed with
valuable content at http://www.amhrt.org.

online medical journal providing surgeons worldwide with information on interdisciplinary
surgery and related fields. You can also read the full-text of the American Medical
Association Journal, Archives of Surgery online at http://www.ama-assn.org/public/journals/surg/about.htm.
This journal aims to promote the art and science of surgery by publishing relevant
peer-reviewed clinical and basic science information to assist the surgeon in optimizing
patient care. Since it is published by the American Medical Association, it has a very
strong American bias, so that many of the articles discuss problems which are of interest
to American surgeons only.
The Online Atlas of Surgery at http://www.bgsm.edu/surg-sci/atlas/atlas.html
provides a concise description of surgical technique, including: instrumentation,
positioning, room set up, anatomy, dissection and repair, and is illustrated with black
and white images.
Disappointingly, there is little on the Web which is
specifically targetted to the general surgeon. In this day of superspecialisation, where
the general surgeon has become a dying breed, this is not really surprising. However,
there is a lot of information aimed for the surgical specialties.
PLink, offers a collection of links for plastic surgery at http://www.nvpc.nl/plink/. Information about
laparoscopic surgery is at www.laparoscopy.com
and this site offers excellent pictures and video clips. TransWeb- All About

Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons has its website at http://www.fascrs.org/.

surgeons, presented as Grand Rounds. These range from common topics such as Otosclerosis

Paragangliomas. Grand Rounds are a format which are very popular for teaching
postgraduates in US hospitals, and these have been presented by the Residents and Faculty

information comes from a well-respected educational institute, it is reliable , uptodate
and free of advertising.

Dentistry
The Dental Database at http://www.webdental.com/

information presented is designed for US dentists. This site has comprehensive directories
of Dentists, Dental Equipment, Dental Labs, Equipment Manufacturers, Dental Photography ,
Dental Supplies, Publications, Books, Journals, Magazines, Professional Associations,
Dental Conventions & Meetings, as well as valuable information on running a dental
office, so that it is a one-stop shop for all dentists looking for information on the Net.
Since it is a commercial site, there is a lot of banner advertising on it, which can be
quite distracting. There is a simple keyword search to make searching of the nearly 200
documents found at the WebDental site easier. There is also a very interesting series of
articles regarding the creation, promotion and marketing of dental-related websites which
will be of interest to all web-savvy dentists !
For Indian dentists, www.dentalindia.com
provides information from an Indian perspective. However, like most Indian sites,
its still very incomplete, because basic data about health and medicine in India is
still lacking.
Pediatrics

point for pediatricians by identifying and linking to high quality General Pediatrics
World-Wide Web sites that can teach, illuminate, and inspire. When selecting a site ,
GeneralPediatrics.com uses a process of peer review by accreditation to ensure that only
high quality sites are included, so that the emphasis is on quality rather than quantity.
To become accredited, a site must clearly display four core quality standards:
- Authorship, including the author's name, affiliation, and
credentials.
- Attribution of facts through the listing of references.
- Disclosure of site ownership and sponsorship.
- Currency of the site by listing dates of content posting and
updating.
Unfortunately, the sites have not been reviewed, but since
they have been selected so carefully, each is worth visiting ! The listing is
comprehensive, and is classified into the following sections: Textbooks ; Policy
Statements and Clinical Practice Guidelines ; Evidence Based Medicine Resources ; Case
Studies and Patient Simulations; Common Problems by Discipline ; Patient Education
Information ; Journals ; Professional Societies ; Continuing Medical Education Courses ;

knowledge with teaching cases in several areas presented as unknowns each week; a
selection of online lectures about radiology ; Second Opinion section, where you can
benefit from help with difficult cases by accessing expert radiologists in 14 different

Obstetrics and Gynecology
Obgyn.net at http://www.obgyn.net
is a superb portal to the Net for all gynecologists - make it your homepage if you are a
gynecologist ! This site uses the latest web technology , and is extremely well-designed,
so that not only it is easy to surf through, its also a pleasure to browse through
the graphics ! Even though its a very busy site ( and attracts thousands of visitors
daily), the response time is very quick, so that the graphics load quickly . What is
unusual about this site is that it has adopted an international viewpoint right from the
beginning - quite a refreshing change from most other medical websites designed in the
USA, which are very limited in their view, since they cannot see beyond the American
border. This means it has a very broad breadth of scope - and in fact the same company
hosts the FIGO site on the Web as well. Obgyn.net has international representatives from
all over the world - and even has mirror sites in German and Spanish !
Obgyn.net is very comprehensive - and addresses all areas a
gynecologist would be interested in , right from fetal monitoring, laparoscopy,
hysterectomy , osteoporosis, to endometriosis. However, it has not restricted its scope to
medical information only - and there is a superb section for women as well. This means
that you can "refer" your patients to the same site if they want more
information on childbirth, infertility or breastfeeding !
Obgyn.net has excellent clinical content which is
constantly updated. The site has a superb online medical journal called Female Patient.
Which is designed for the practising gynecologist, so that it is full of information which
you can put to immediate clinical use. There are also videos - for example, on laparoscopy
and 3-D ultrasound, which you can actually watch online !
Obgyn.net is an interactive site - and it hosts the mailing
list, obgyn-l. This is a very active list, in which gynecologists from all over the world
take part. You can ask for help and information about difficult clinical problems - or
help others deal with their rare cases. The discussion can get quite heated - and
its fun to participate ! There are also many live chat sessions, hosted by experts
on many different areas, which gives you an opportunity to interact with gynecologists
from all over the world.
Obgyn.net offers many freebies as well ! Many companies
will send you videotapes and text books if you fill up the request forms online. It also
offers you a free webpage on the site, so that you can tell the rest of the world about
your practise ! And of course, there is free Medline searching as well ! The major
irritation is that there is too much advertising on the Site - but this is the price we
have all learnt to pay - its just like watching a commercial on TV !
