This journal aims to promote the art and science of surgery by publishing relevant peer-reviewed clinical and basic science information to assist the surgeon in optimizing patient care. Since it is published by the American Medical Association, it has a very strong American bias, so that many of the articles discuss problems which are of interest to American surgeons only. The Online Atlas of Surgery at http://www.bgsm.edu/surg-sci/atlas/atlas.html provides a concise description of surgical technique, including: instrumentation, positioning, room set up, anatomy, dissection and repair, and is illustrated with black and white images. Disappointingly, there is little on the Web which is specifically targetted to the general surgeon. In this day of superspecialisation, where the general surgeon has become a dying breed, this is not really surprising. However, there is a lot of information aimed for the surgical specialties. Since it is a commercial site, there is a lot of banner advertising on it, which can be quite distracting. There is a simple keyword search to make searching of the nearly 200 documents found at the WebDental site easier. There is also a very interesting series of articles regarding the creation, promotion and marketing of dental-related websites which will be of interest to all web-savvy dentists ! For Indian dentists, www.dentalindia.com provides information from an Indian perspective. This site uses the latest web technology , and is extremely well-designed, so that not only it is easy to surf through, it's also a pleasure to browse through the graphics ! Even though it's a very busy site ( and attracts thousands of visitors daily), the response time is very quick, so that the graphics load quickly . What is unusual about this site is that it has adopted an international viewpoint right from the beginning - quite a refreshing change from most other medical websites designed in the USA, which are very limited in their view, since they cannot see beyond the American border. This means it has a very broad breadth of scope - and in fact the same company hosts the FIGO site on the Web as well. Obgyn.net has international representatives from all over the world - and even has mirror sites in German and Spanish ! Obgyn.net is very comprehensive - and addresses all areas a gynecologist would be interested in , right from fetal monitoring, laparoscopy, hysterectomy , osteoporosis, to endometriosis. There are also videos - for example, on laparoscopy and 3-D ultrasound, which you can actually watch online ! Obgyn.net is an interactive site - and it hosts the mailing list, obgyn-l. This is a very active list, in which gynecologists from all over the world take part. There are also many live chat sessions, hosted by experts on many different areas, which gives you an opportunity to interact with gynecologists from all over the world. It also offers you a free webpage on the site, so that you can tell the rest of the world about your practise ! And of course, there is free Medline searching as well !
